Background
Kievbass was a monthly cultural event bringing the world's best alternative electronic DJs to Ukraine. The project became a cult clubbing event, gathering an army of fans, and even spreading to events organized in other Ukrainian cities.
Challenge
At the very beginning of my Kyiv venture I was approached by DJ Valta and DJ Minikin to help them visually shape the Kievbass brand. Their goal was to popularize alternative electronic music and establish the similar culture and scene that had already existed in big centres like London and Berlin.
The years spent under the Soviet authoritarian state model erased almost any understanding for alternative culture. To beat that legacy we created a recognizable visual identity which we enhanced with different visuals for each season.
Visual Identity
Over the course of four seasons the initial visual identity went to a couple of changes.
The first season opened with a simple wordmark Kievbass.
Second season introduced a logomark, a leftover graphic from the “rave on” event visual. The symbol perfectly depicted the ambiguous character of Kievbass – a headless standstill individual.
In the last season we ditched the wordmark as the headless person became a fairly popular symbol. In order to better contain its loose shape we introduced a heraldic shield.
Season 1: Kievbasstards
For our debut season, we juxtaposed a silhouetted figure with graphic representations of electronic music—waves, strobes, clouds, and vibrant gradients. The flagship visual, 'Jump In,' shows a person diving headfirst into a pool of sound and raw energy.
Season 2: Kievbass Monsters
In Season 2, we introduced a subtle social twist by playing on misunderstood ideals like freedom, tolerance, and justice. We transformed them into tongue-in-cheek 'everyday monsters': freedoom, toilerance, and justease.
Season 3: Keep calm and lose your head
Building on our earlier momentum, we set out to reveal the team behind Kievbass while preserving our signature headless visual identity. To capture how event production is demanding and chaotic—yet deeply liberating—we literally erased our own heads.
Season 4,
As Kievbass gained prominence and copycats emerged across Ukraine's underground scene, we made a deliberate visual pivot. Pairing ornate, vintage typography with avant-garde electronic music immediately set us apart, signaling a mature brand with deeper roots and a lasting legacy.
